This is close to the perfect lunch place. (Dinner menu equally good but we slightly prefer the ambiance of 9th and 9th for that meal). Both the expected (falafel, kabob) and less expected with, usually, a choice of having them in pita mode, with rice,or atop various Medierranean salads. Everything is of good quality and quantity is suitable for lunch. Appealing housemade limeade and flavored tea. Terrace is shady for an early lunch. Interior is small but pleasant. Service fine. We have been customers for years and find it remarkably consistent.

Mazza's smaller location at 15th & 15th is great for lunch and dinner! The lamb is delicious! The cozy space is perfect for small groups and dates.

3.5 stars for now. I'll give these guys a chance with dinner and update my stars accordingly. For lunch I ordered: Lamb Sfiha - a tasty little flatbread appetizer served with a yummy cucumber sauce. Save any leftover cucumber sauce for your salad. Mediterranean steak & cheese with Lebanese salad on the side - the sandwich was tasty but the meat was a little tough. The staff is very attentive. My beverage was constantly topped off and there is a little post outside in the shade to tie off your dog complete with a water dish. But I'd recommend checking it. It was dirty but I cleaned it out and topped it off with some bottled water. There is outdoor seating too with umbrellaed tables (if you want fresh or or be closer to your pup). All in all a good experience but I'll judge it more when I try a traditional meal rather than a steak sandwich.

I really like Mazza, definitely one of my top 5 favorite restaurants in Salt Lake. First and foremost, the food is really spot on, everything from the appetizers to the main dishes are full of flavor. I recommend getting the appetizer sampler so you can try a few things. I especially like the muhamara, hummus, and fava beans. Secondly the atmosphere has a quaint, european cafe-like vibe (I'm speaking on for the location on 15th and 15th) Overall a really great place.

One of my favorite restaurants in Salt Lake. Can't go wrong with the chicken shawarma (sandwich, over rice, or over salad). Best fries EVER. If you eat here and don't like it, there is something wrong with you.

I've eaten at Mazza on a few occasions and the food is pretty good. It's certainly not my favorite Mediterranean or Greek restaurant. But the food is well prepared, appropriately seasoned, and the wait staff is very good. Recommended.

Twice...twice... in one trip to Salt Lake City. The food was brilliant. Looking for vegan food, I discovered that the menu has a 'code' for vegetarian and vegan, two slightly different colored green leaves next to the item. However, I try to be an oil-free vegan which makes me particularity annoying when I eat out. Most all of the menu offerings including the vegan selections, included the words...swimming in olive oil. Well, it did not say swimming, but I've realized that if they go to the trouble of mentioning the oil, they do not spare it. I found several delightful items for me. We started with the sampler plate which included hummus...and it had oil drizzled around it. So, I worked the center portion with no oil. Thinking about it now, I'm sure I could have asked for it with no oil. I ordered the Mujaddara, Vegetarian Grape Leaves and Roasted Tomato & Red Lentil Soup. The tastes were authentic, fresh and left me full up to the brim. I also tried the Almaza Pilsner, (LEBANON) which was a surprisingly awesome. I will definately hit this place up again and again when I hit the big SLC. BTW, I dined at the 15th&15th street location which was hipster central.

My husband has always wanted to try this place. The hostess asked if we had reservations even though most tables were empty. Tiny tables without much room between. We were both really hungry so we started off with hummus and three or four warm pitas. I had a felafel sandwich with a side of their specialty rice (basmati with ground beef, almonds and raisins). Hubby had lamb kebabs with Lebanese salad, fries and rice. His dipping sauces were great--yogurt with cucumbers and dill plus a tomato based one. We finished the meal with walnut baklava. It was more than $53 so we won't be eating there often.

We love this spot. We ordered the appetizer sampler with the hummus, fries and salad and the chicken shwarma & steak and cheese sandwiches. The hummus is amazing, and the fries are probably the best in the valley - they come with an aioli dipping sauce that is the bomb. Location is very cool - in a little neighborhood area and it feels like the local go to. Definitely will be going back a lot.

I love, love, love this place. First: PLENTY OF GLUTEN-FREE, VEGAN OPTIONS. Their mujaddarah (spiced lentils, rice, and onions) always hits the spot. The potatoes harra are probably one of my favorite potato dishes on the planet. Their fries are great, the hummus is delicious, and their roasted tomato and lentil soup is killer. Two comments: 1. Occasionally, the Lebanese salad has too much dressing, so be sure to tell them to go light on it 2. Both my husband and I have been somewhat disappointed with the entrees before, but we've never been disappointed with the appetizers. Our favorite thing to do is get a sampler plate (okay, I'll admit, if we're super hungry, we'll each get a sampler plate). You choose 3 or 4 of the appetizers and it's enough food to fill you up. You can also choose from the soups for that option. Normally, I'll get a sampler plate with the Lebanese salad, tomato/lentil soup, and either the potatoes harra or mujaddarah.

Pretty good! The hummus is good, as are many of the traditional dishes. The only dish I have had that left me disappointed was the kappsa. The kappsa they serve at Mazza is different than the kappsa I have had in the Middle East. Overall, it will not disappoint!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Mazza! I always have and I always will! The 15th & 15th location is really small, but it's the original Mazza and it's great (head to 9th & 9th if the line is too long). There are so many gluten free and veg options to choose from.. I love to get the appetizer sampler and have a little bit of everything. Seriously, Mazza is one of my most favorite SLC restaurants.

Simply put, Mazza is one of my favorite restaurants in Salt Lake. Different and consistently delicious, accommodating to a variety of diners, staffed by friendly folks, and next to the best bookshop in the state. You can't go wrong with their menu, and the small plate samplers are a wise path to follow. I'll always order loobia, muhamarah, and mazza special rice. And I'll always order their best in the city fries. You want fry sauce? Mazza's got fry sauce. Also, I discovered that they have a fantastic spicy paste/hot sauce if you ask. Lovely patio. Cozy interior. All good. Oooh, and don't forget to order the cardamom spiced tea with the house sweetener.

The starters were delicious, lamb pshifa and fried kibbeh. Like the menu says the fried kibbeh is so yummy just getting one is not enough. I ordered the chicken and potatoes and they were just ok. The chicken was over cooked and became tough and fibrous. I liked the bakhlawa squares. Will come back and try again...

Absolutely one of the best places in Salt Lake City. Get to either location. The 9th and 9th spot is better if you have a large party or you want mixed drinks but the 15th and 15th spot is very nice and is more intimate.

Love everything on the menu so far - been there twice. You have to try their fries with aioli sauce - they might just be the best fries I have ever had!

Very good food! I have never been disappointed with my experience, within the six years of dining here. One of the three top restaurants I consistently recommend to friends, family and clients.

Some people may say that Mazza is overpriced, but I would disagree. Good Lebanese food is not exactly common, and neither are the ingredients. Preparation of some the dishes is somewhat labor intensive. I think those factors need to be considered in assessing the pricing. I love this location! I have not yet been to the one on 9th & 9th. I found the decor and ambiance lovely and not overdone. The food was quite good and the waitstaff pleasantly attentive.

A lot of conflicting thoughts here. I'd been looking forward to this for a long time and due to a surprise car ailment throwing a wrench *ahem* into our normal Saturday plans, it proved a perfect opportunity to hit this place up. Wait was very minimal on a Saturday. The place, as noted, is tiny, maybe a dozen tables, including outside. Staff was uniformly excellent and raised this up a star because service is important, dammit and when you have those who do it as well as here, it must be made known. Decor and the table setting stuff was all pretty cool. I dug all that. They started from humble beginnings and they're shooting hard for a high end dining experience here. Unfortunately, even though the menus are very nice, this place falls a bit short when it comes to the food. As should be clear by now, money does not really factor too much into my consideration when it comes to eating out. If the menu prices are on the high side, such as here, I'm expecting a corresponding rise in quality and if I don't want to shell out that kind of coin, I just won't go to a given place. So here we have a fairly expensive place to eat and some fairly unique menu offerings and while service is right about where it needs to be and everything else is as well, the food has to be somewhat better than a doner street cart, actually considerably better. With great regret, I must report that it is not. Their hummus, while ok, made me miss Sabra (again, like Greek Market did in a previous fairly recent review - as of this writing). The pita bread was warm and good, but a bit bland and Chicken Express walks all over them, like it's not even close (well, Chicken Express walks on everyone, so no shame there, but still sayin'). The reason I really wanted to get here was because I'd been given to understanding this place has the best shawarma in the valley. So, of course, once I get there, I order the seafood platter. This means that I have another return trip at some point in the future, but backing up a step, the reason I chose it is because it had scallops on it. Since I stopped my East coast trips, I've been missing scallops, as evidently cooking them is a challenge beyond most of the places here since Dos Serranos closed its doors all that time ago. I'm still missing them. The ones I got here were undercooked. The shrimp, however, were cooked to near perfection and the mahi mahi wasn't far behind. The rice that came with it was dreadful and the salad was about half-edible, but this is only part of the fault of the restaurant. I say this because they didn't print a list of the ingredients and I somehow forgot, once again, the ridiculous Middle Eastern penchant for dumping onions in everything. My wife's dish, which I forget the name of now, she liked, but her comment was that she could have made it equally or better at home for about 1/4 of the cost. Yikes. The hot tea with cardamom I found initially interesting, especially with the orange blossom water, but it wore into being a halfway decent replacement for an Earl Grey into a sort of bitter thing. The pudding dessert (had lots of room after the dinner misfire) was also definitely worth getting once, but while good, it was not $6 good for that tiny portion. I think that sums it all up, actually. The food is much closer to the humble origins, plastered all over, discussing the quite commendable rise from serving food on paper plates to this approach towards high end dining. It's like Ice Cube once said, "you done went a hundred miles, but you still got one to go." Actually, come to think of it, it might be a bit more than one, but the point is that they're not there yet, though their vision is clear. Perhaps they could use the 9th & 9th location as the regular spot, with a price downgrade and this place as a much higher specialty location, but frankly, the food is not up to that level quite yet.

I stopped by here last night with my fiance for dinner. We weren't exactly looking for a Mediterranean place to eat, but earlier in the day we had picked up a pamphlet which explained how they have won best Mediterranean in Salt Lake City for the past 12 years. With that I was sold. As soon as we decided to eat here I made reservations on opentable for 8 PM. Unfortunately due a GPS error we were about 15 minutes late. Whenever we arrived we were greeted by a host and he told us that it wasn't a problem that we were late as they were not nearly as busy as they had been earlier in the night. Entering the restaurant I could see that was true as it was only about 50% full. I can't say that I noticed too much of the decor of the place but there were some interesting pieces of cloth underneath the glass of the table. My fiance and I decided to start off our evening with the Baba ganooj. It came out about 5 minutes after we ordered it with 3 pitas to have with it. Whenever I picked up a pita I was surprised by how hot it still was but was pleased with that. The baba ganooj was really good and had a nice smoky flavor to it, almost like the eggplant was grilled. Right in the middle of eating it as we still had a pita and some baba ganooj left, our entrees were served. It couldn't have been more than 10 minutes after ordering them and so I was surprised by that. For dinner I ended up going with the mousakhan which was described as flat, thin bread, stuffed with a mixture of golden fried onions, chicken morsels, herbs and spices with lots of olive oil and came with a side salad as well as a garlic dip. Whenever it came the mousakhan reminded me of a puff pastry but tasted excellent. It was huge and had a large amount of chicken in it which was spiced perfectly. I ended up dipping a lot in the garlic dip which was good, strong but not overpowering. Finally the salad was good but nothing special as it was mostly lettuce with a sour vinegarette. The bottom line for me is that I would definitely head back here again in the future. Both my appetizer and entree were excellent and I can see why they have won best Mediterranean restaurant many years in a row.

One of the best restaurants in Salt Lake, with possibly the best sidewalk dining in the city. The tight-knit, tree-lined, walkable, 15th and 15th district is the perfect urban hideout, and a dinner at Mazza is a great way to spend a summer evening. Its also the best value for a sit-down meal in 15th and 15th, as its next door to the very expensive Cafe Fresco and Paris Bistro. Menu has a whole range of super fresh, light vegetarian options. The hummus is tasty, the shwarma is excellent, you really can't go wrong.

Another dinner at Mazza and I find myself a bit conflicted about the experience. The food is wonderful, as it always is, and I would eat here every few days if food alone was my concern. But service is valuable to me as well, and that where my experiences here always seems to fall flat. I certainly don't expect to be doted on, but it would be nice to get just a little more attentive service. I mean the place is only so big...you have to walk by every table anywhere you go, so why not at least make sure everything is going well. Nonetheless, the food outweighs the service, and as such I will most assuredly be lured back by these Middle Eastern magicians of cuisine.

Mazza is a great place to experience authentic middle-eastern cuisine, though the cost might outweigh the benefits. Ambience: Quiet and cozy- The tables are positioned fairly close to one another though not uncomfortably so. Food: I purchased the Lamb & Rice Dolaa, which is their lamb specialty dish. It had a warm, hearty flavor. It comes with shredded lamb, with pine nuts and almonds over a bed of rice. I must say the flavor was excellent but it missed the mark on a true "lamb" taste. Overall it was satisfactory but the quantity wasn't worth $19. If you want more meat you might try a kebab (which is cheaper anyway) Service: The service was satisfactory but nothing to rave about. I would have preferred a more educated waitress, (she didn't seem to have a great understanding of the menu). Overall she was proficient and kept our glasses full. Mazza is an excellent place to try if your feeling the need for a change. It will definitely be something you remember when compared to a repetitive chain.

A bit on the overpriced side for what they offer, but the food was delicious. Also, this location is incredible 15th and 15th is a gem in SLC, and everyone should visit it more often.

Last night I enjoyed a fabulous meal with my son at Mazza. It can be tricky finding a good place to eat as he is vegan and I'm not. Mazza solves that. Our food, the service, and the setting all contributed to a great experience. Thanks, Mazza!

  • Spidermonkey J.

Tiny space although decorated nicely. Staff was relatively unprofessional to my standards. What I ordered was alright but the entree prices are way out of line for the area. There's a reason this place was half empty during prime time on a Friday night....I don't think I'd go back.

This place has pretty good Mediterranean food. Only two stars since their service left me frustrated. If you have a late party you have to sit in the corner, no service, or just eat somewhere else.

  • Madhu D.

quite a varied selection of food. i went with the lentil & spinach soup, shwarma & a walnut baklava. all were very good. i had a plane to catch so i took the shwarma & dessert to go. it was definitely worth it... not only for the taste though the mouth watering looks from people around me wondering where i got it. there's definitely not a place that would serve something like this in the slc airport. i hope to return in the future. the place is small though filled with warmth & great customer service. it's great for any kind of diet as they have well marked the menu for anything from vegan diet to no diet. i'm sure if you had any other dietary concerns they would be accommodating.

Great service and environment. I can't really speak for the food as I do not necessarily have a taste for it, but the restaurant was still all together a great experience. The only negative aspect of the restaurant is the very small, somewhat cramped quarters.

I am always interested in trying Mediterranean food as there isn't a lot in Austin. I passed by this place several times and thought we should check it out. The dishes were not overwhelmingly fantastic as in "oh my God" but they were certainly very good. The portions were generous and everything was very fresh. The quality was very good and in particular, none of the fried foods had a hint of greasiness. There is a curry-like seasoning that is in most of the meat that some people may enjoy and others not so much. I thought it was good and not so strong as to be overwhelming. We tried a couple of different appetizers and two very different entrees, all of which were very good. Other than the kebabs, unfortunately, I'm at a loss to remember all the names. The green bean appetizer was one and the entree I had was like a chicken meat pie in a very flaky crust. It was a lot of food and it was good. The house potatoes and fries with aioli sauce were both a highlight as were the drinks. We had a Lebanese cabernet that is one of the smoothest wines I've ever tasted while I had an unusual whiskey-based drink called a Dark and Stormy which was delicious. I took a baklava to go and had a quick taste, very good as expected. The service was friendly and prompt and overall, I have no complaints. There are plenty of items on the menu and I'd like to try some others.

This restaurant has very good atmosphere, nice and clean. I have always loved their lamp kebab and potato harra. Their service has been much better than last year. If you think their dinner Manu is litter pricy you can go there at lunch, I can never finish my dinner anyway.

Horrible. Terrible. Way over priced for barely edible food. I could not have been more let down. I was expecting amazing food based on the reviews here and let me tell you, this is awful food. We ordered 2 appetizers and 2 meals, paid $65 and walked away starving and sad. Please avoid. If this is the example of good Lebanese/Middle Eastern food in Utah I am saddened on a level I cannot explain.

Mazza is excellent. You cannot go wrong for middle eastern or just excellent , consistent food. I am vegan and there are multiple options. I love the roasted lentil soup, muhjaddra, fatoosh, grape leafs, loobia, and baba ganoosh, to name a few. My husband and son love the chicken or lamb kababs, swarma, and fries...which are baked before frying in olive oil (think Dutch frites). The wait staff is friendly, attentive, and willing to give suggestions or make substitutions. The neighborhood is charming and the patio in the summer is delightful, shaded and has live music on Fridays. This location is small and cozy. For larger parties, try the 9th and 9th location. I would give it the same review, sans the live music Fridays during the summer. Casual attire. If you have to wait for a table, it is well worth the wait!

Cozy is a great summary of Mazza. There's an intimate, warm and jovial mood that you can't seem to avoid soaking in. I've dined here three times, all three of which I've brought my own wine. The wine list appeared to be solid, having carrying a few of my favorites, but I can hardly afford them at restaurants; the food in general is on the higher price range spectrum of what I can normally afford. It's worth it, however. Twice the waiter corked and poured our wine for us, while at the last visit the wine was simply opened and left for us to deviously pour our own libelous portions. Both circumstances, I would say, are great representations of the staff's attentiveness. The last visit, for example, the misses and I were bawdy and looking all a frazzle, like we really need that wine. It was best to leave the bottle to our own ravenous desires. The aperitifs are all winners. The sauces, authentic, and each having with their own house idiosyncratic twists that help reinforce the charm (sumac in the Tzatziki sauce, creating a pink hue, splendid). Our last visit involved us splitting two of the aperitifs (hummus platter and grape leaves, both knock-outs) and one main dish - plenty of food for two. The felafel is both authentic and savory as you bite into its snapping, fried shell. The makashi is handled with a finesse and a carefully mixed concoction of your typical cumin and coriander-like spices, and the eggplant is soft, almost melting and tasting like golden butter. Being a vegetarian, I can't speak for the platters that are meat only, but all the vegetarian/vegan fare is quite distinct and vast enough to keep you coming back for a variety of options. The only detraction I've found with Mazza is their insistence on using titanic portions of oil in their entrees. You leave feeling bloated and in need of some tums. If you've gotten the bad misfortune of a weak stomach, you may want to enjoy their quaint salads, for the spice and oil volumes can be quite high. The taste is right, and the oil is put to good use, it's just not something that's too congenial with an entire bottle of wine. And Mazza is such an evocative place, it's a shame not to have some accompanying spirit in a restaurant naturally already full of them.

Without a doubt, Mazza delivers some of the absolute best Lebanese deliciousness Ive ever ingested. The interior is cozy and very intimate, only 10 tables I believe. Situated in the corner of 15th and 15th. Oh, and their hummus is out of this world. As is the mujadarra rice.

  • Jeff N.

The neighborhood and the service were really great but the food left something to be desired. Hummus, meh. Schwarma was a bit on the dry side. I really did not get the Tabbouleh. I expect the base of this dish to be the bulgar. All other ingredients were an afterthought to the parsley. Seriously, this stuff was 95% parsley. On the bright side, my breath was really fresh!

I've been to Mazza many times in the past, but not recently. I enjoy the lunch menu items, reasonably priced and very good. The dinner menu I found lacking and overpriced, still decent food but not something I would return to. I'm not sure why, but I only rank this place as OK for dinner; good for lunch.

yes yeS yES YES!!! This restaurant has got the right touch. After a long week, a few of us fell into this establishment for a last stab at Salt Lake City dining. SCORE. Each of the appetizers took me to the next level of gastronomic heaven, only to prepare my senses for a surprisingly perfect filet. I hardly ever get filet's any more, but damn damn damn. This one was on the money. Well done, Mazza! I'm excited just thinking of this place.

Funny that a Middle Eastern place serves some of the best fries that you can find in the entire state, but it's true. The fries at this place are exceptional. As is the dipping sauce they come with. Love pretty much all of their sandwiches too, especially the Chicken Shawarma. And whatever you do, don't pass on the Muhamara - a red pepper concoction served with lettuce leaves. It's to die for.

Just had a delightful dinner about a week ago. I love Middle Eastern cuisine and I love the various options that Mazza has to offer. We are big fans of eating everything with Labneh. This is a thick, greek yogurt that is strained to create a very tangy, cheese type of starter. I order this everywhere and while my place in NYC makes it the best, Mazza is a close runner up. Our dinner this particular evening was a lovely, cozy experience. 15th and 15th is one of my favorite areas in the city so it was a nice departure from the downtown restaurant frenzy. I am deducting a star for the pita bread. It tasted as though it was old and just reheated in the microwave. Definitely was lacking the light, soft texture that I crave for sopping up every flavor on our subsequent meals. But on to the main attraction. My dining companion had a simple chicken kebab...it was good and came with a nice dipping sauce. My meal stole the show. I ordered the Lamb and Rice Dolaa. A very simple dish with rice and braised lamb, but the spices created such a rich flavor. I loved it! Adding some of the labneh cut through the richness and created the perfect bite. Paired with a glass of their house red wine and I was a pretty happy lady. I will be back for more!

I went to the Mazza on 9th & 9th for my Grandma's 80th birthday. We had a big group (14 or 15 of us) and went early; there wasn't a problem seating us at 5:30 on a Thursday, but it began to fill up around 6:30 or so, and we may have had more trouble getting space then. The food was delicious. We ordered sampler plates of appetizers, including muhamara, loobia, grape leaves, sfiha, labneh, and fried kibbeh. All were good, but everyone's favorite was the muhamara, which was a reddish dip made with nuts and red pepper. It was yummy both on pita and on the lettuce wraps that accompanied it. For dinner, I had the Spinach and Lamb dish, which came with rice. The lamb was already mixed into the dish (rather than being strips on top or a sirloin, which was what I was expecting). The flavors were good and the lamb very tender. It came with a lemon slice, and I was pleasantly surprised by how well the lemon juice tasted on the rest of the dish. One of my cousins had the Lamb and Rice Doola, of which I snuck a few tastes. The Doola had a rather nutty flavor that complemented the lamb quite well. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food as well, although I didn't taste any other dishes. We got a few bottles of some Lebanese wine, although I'm not sure which ones. They were very good as well. While they didn't have crayons, the waitress was kind enough to bring over some paper and a couple of pens for my young cousins without being asked. Much appreciated!

Salt Lake Magazine's recent edition (found in my hotel room) has their 2009 dining awards, which mention that Mazza was an inaugural (in 2008) Hall of Fame member, along with Red Iguana. So between that, and all the glowing reviews from various sources, and my love for Middle Eastern food, I wanted to check out what could probably be considered legitimately one of the "best restaurants in town." I was satisfied but not impressed. They have a tiny interior with about ten tables, and an outdoor area with four, and on a Saturday midafternoon, there was a steady stream of patrons despite the fact that this place is in the middle of nowhere. I was delighted by the beer selection--18 in total, many from Utah and many from countries such as Armenia, Morocco, and Lebanon. I tried Almaza, a Lebanese pilsner, and Kilikia, an Armenian dark lager. For those alone the visit was worth it; I had never even heard of those beers! Tabouleh and hummus: fine but not great. The hummus especially could have used some texture and pizazz. The baba ghannouj was no great shakes either but gets slightly higher marks. Plus, somebody back in the kitchen was a bit heavy-handed with the olive oil on those two. Chicken shawarma sandwich: excellent. Grilled and pressed, the sandwich has a near perfect combination of ingredients. Balance and proportion are so important in a good sandwich. I eat a lot of chicken shawarma sandwiches, and this was one of the best. They put Lebanese pickles in their version, and only a small amount of other vegetables. All in all, it apparently successfully fills its niche in the SLC, but compared to what I'm used to, it doesn't quite stack up.

Mazza doesn't really need another 5-star review, but I'm going to give it to them anyways. My history with Mazza runs deep, from when there were no printed menus and (if memory serves) no tables to speak of either. You ordered at the counter and waited for your food there. My brother and I would come into Mazza for the fries and the addictive garlic sauce that accompanied it. I am happy to say that, of the old days, the fries remain. More importantly the rest of the establishment has grown and improved by leaps and bounds. Tables, a liquor license, and wait-staff have turned the shop into one of Salt Lake's most beloved restaurants. And though my taste has grown beyond the french fries, I've yet to have a bad item at Mazza. I returned there today and realized that since moving away from Salt Lake City I still hadn't had Middle Eastern food as good as at Mazza. Get a four-item sampler plate, order three items you've never tried before, and get those french fries as well!

Pretty good middle eastern food and quite reasonable. We had 3 samplers for $10- hummus, lamb pizza, and green beans in olive oil- all good, but the pita it came with was especially tasty. Main dishes were eggplant pita sandwich (very good) and the steak and cheese pita (good). For dessert we had a pastry stuffed with cream cheese and drizzled with orange syrup- I didn't really care for it but the wife did. The place is very small, so not suitable for large parties and if you go Fri or Sat you might have to wait since they don't take reservations.........

I love this place. After dining here countless times over the past 5 years it's safe to say this is one of my favorites in SLC. The food is consistently good and the staff is always friendly and prompt. The 15th and 15th location is cozy, quaint and makes you feel like you're eating dinner in your favorite grandma's dining room. The cute patio is perfect for dinner in the warmer months. The 9th and 9th location is much larger, with dim lighting and more romantic ambience. The patio at 9th and 9th is great as well. The house salad with a side of falafel never disappoints and the hummus is the best in town. So creamy and perfect. The fries with aioli dipping sauce are equally delicious. Also love the chicken kebab sandwich.

The first time I went here I was super impressed. I don't recall exactly what I ordered but I think it was the Mutabbak. I just remember my mouth being delighted with unique flavors and leaving feeling full and more than satisfied (despite it being a little pricey). I've been back a couple of times and haven't been AS impressed, but I still think it's a great little "hole in the wall" to eat. I admit I haven't been to the one at 9th & 9th, which I've heard may be slightly better, but the neighborhood feel and ambience in the little one on 15th East is part of what I love about it.

Neighborhood gem! My girl friends suggested this restaurant on a road trip, and I fell in love with the food. We sat outside on a beautiful summer day and enjoyed the libations (creative and delicious - we sampled the pink lemonade and the champagne lemon drop), the appetizers (hummus and kibbeh were my favorites), and the meal. I had a beef kabob in a pita with a delightful tomato jam, and the little pickles are crunchy and flavorful. If you are looking for something different to expand your dining horizons, try Mazza. I have a new respect for Middle Eastern cuisine.

I went with a friend of mine, who had stumbled upon the 15th and 15th location, for lunch today. It was a great! I am a fan of Cafe Med as well, but I think the flavor here was better. I agree with Betsy, it is tiny at that location. Food was tasty and plentiful! A bit pricey for a weekly lunch spot but once a month or so it is fine. Great service, not too smothering, but attentive even though they were PACKED!

The 15th and 15th location is small compared to 9th and 9th, however the food is just as Tasty. Mazza is one of the best places in Salt Lake for authentic Middle Eastern Cuisine. They also have a great wine and beer menu.

Stopped in for dinner with Classy Mike during our road trip from New York to Los Angeles. This was during our condescending jaunt through the Midwest, so you can imagine our surprise at discovering that Salt Lake City was, like, a real city with actual, you know, stuff. Like Mazza. Everyone knows that I love Middle Eastern food, and thankfully Mazza delivered my fix. Though the hummus was a bit bland, my chicken schwarma was pretty darned good. The real winner might have been the fries, though, which were among the best I've tasted. If they ain't fried twice, they ain't fried right. Food: 18/25 stars Ambiance: 16/25 stars Service: 21/25 stars Bathroom: 18/25 stars Probability of going back: 70% if in SLC again

Talk about neighborhood eats.. As you are driving around through blocks and blocks of residential you stumble upon this place amongst a half block of other small businesses. The food, stellar! Well 90% of it.. I was quite disappointed with the dolmathes as they were not that flavorful, and the stems from the grape leaves being a bit inedible. Also the turkish coffee was disgustingly prepared. Much too thick with grinds in the foam, and no where near as hot as it should be. I'd say above luke warm at best. I think they probably didn't prepare it correctly using hot water rather than cold. But other than that there are a number of appetizers I want to go back and try. I really recommend the 3 or 4 course sampler. My main dish was a lamb stew that was amazing, and the basmati rice was extremely well prepared.

Mazza is good. Verrrry good! I had never heard of most of the menu items, so we just ordered a panacea of new and exotic dishes in order to get a good sampling. Great idea! The shawarma sandwich (beef and lamb in a pita with lots of good veggies) was amazing. The fries were some of the best I've tasted. Everything was really high-quality and well executed, except for the chicken shawarma sandwich, which had extremely DRY chicken in it. There were a few taste and flavor profiles that no one at our table particularly liked (the lime-ade and the spinach pirogi type-thing), but they were based purely on personaly preference, not lack of quality. There were lots of unique flavor, spice and seasoning combinations here. Mazza offers tons of veggie and vegan dishes, as well as gluten-free items. But, don't fret my fellow carnivores, there are ample meat dishes on the menu too. Prices were very reasonable and the place is super homey and comfortable. The service was far from what I would call "polished," but still very attentive and helpful. We will definitely be back!

Saw it on the food channel I think... Checked out this location last Sat night with a friend. Place was cute and quaint. Our server was lacking personality but I got the feeling that he was tired. We ate the Muhammara and we liked it, the Hummus with Ground beef was good but the hummus was little runny. Felt like we were eating Tachini sauce. The red lental soup was very good. The Fattoosh salad was a huge dissapointment! It had no taste! We tried to add some cheese to make it better... I am thinking the dressing needs some more pizzazz! I will post pictures in the future...

Solid scores for range of menu and execution. Lamb and Spinach delicious on this visit...as was the baba ganooj. Oh...and that apricot turnover for desert? Yes indeed!

I had the Chicken Kebab Sandwich (take-out) and it was fantastic. Perfectly seasoned, and the Armenian pickle provided a nice complement to the spices. I'm excited to stop by for a full meal.

Back in town, so my mom suggested we come here as its in the neighborhood. Parking can be a little hard to find but it wasn't too bad. We sat inside, as it was a little too warm outside, but the patio option looked great. I don't eat a lot of Middle Eastern food, and most of my experience is with Persian food, so I wasn't sure what to expect. But everything was very familiar - even if the dishes and food combinations weren't. There is a lot of meat on the menu, and there are more rice than potato options...Its all definitely a protein, carb and veg combo that we Americans love! There are a lot of choices on the menu, with a lot of range. So it wasn't intimidating or too exotic, and it was very easy to order something new. We decided to get two different dishes and share them, which I recommend doing. We asked them to bring the food out family style and they had no problem accommodating that. We ordered the chicken and cauliflower over a basmatti with nut and raisin rice, and the lamb over rice. Both were quite nice. The basmatti rice was excellent and the lamb was very tender, not too fatty and full of flavor. Also, there was no skimping on the lamb or chicken - there was plenty of meat. They had a nice selection of wines, both by the glass and by the bottle, at very reasonable prices (~$5-$7/glass). The waitress made a very nice red wine recommendation (I can't remember the name, but it was from Lebanon), that worked well with both dishes. They also have imported and local micro brew if that's your thing...Its nice to have the option - for $4-$5.. One thing , if you like to nosh on something while you wait for your food, order an appetizer. I was expecting some bread either while we waited or with our dinner, but nothing. Also, the waitress seamed a little distracted. She forgot to bring the wine she had recommended until I reminded her. And she didn't come to check on us once while we ate, to see if our water glasses or wine glasses needed refilling. Dinner for two, with wine, no desert, came to $48, including tip. Overall the experience was good. The food was excellent. The ambiance was friendly.

Vegetarian's review - A trip to Slc is never complete without eating at Mazza. I have eaten here thrice and can't believe I have never written a review. Being a middle eastern food lover, my taste buds are in for a treat every time I visit this restaurant. What will one find here ? Candle lit tables, dimly lit interiors, polite waiters and delicious food. We got the starters sampler that came with three sides- we picked - muhammara, grape leaves and spinach fatayer. The fatayer was a lil too doughy with very little filling. The rest were very yummy. The pita that it came with was soft and thick. For the main course ee picked maghmoor. The eggplant chickpea stew was very flavorful. The basmati rice was fluffy. Very satisfying meal. We ended with a cream cheese roll flavored with orange syrup. Toothsome. The tea we ordered was served with rose water. Very refreshing. I highly recommend this place.

Mazza is amazing! I tried dining at both locations and although the decor isn't as nice, the one on 15th and 15th is definitely superior. at 9th and 9th, my sandwich was soggy, lamb was tough and had lots of tendons, my fries were just normal, and flavor was lacking. At 15th and 15th, they use a different type of french fries and there was flavor to them! everything i've tried there is amazing- lamb kebab and kafta sandwiches are my favorites.

Wow! I read about Mazza in the Salt Lake City Weeky paper and had wanted to try it out ever since then. We went last night. It was ridiculously delicious. We're both vegetarians so we're always looking for a good restaurant that has lots of choices for us. Mazza didn't disappoint---it had a plethora of veggie choices for us. The range of flavors and their delectable combination had us saying "yummm" and "mmmm" several times during the meal. The service was perfect too. Highly recommended!

I can't say enough about this Mazza. Potatoes harra is a must. Hummus is like heaven on earth. These people are not messing around. The food is seriously high quality, especially for the price, which was really reasonable. The service is also perfect. The atmosphere relaxed. Dining area spotless.

Yay! I love Mazza!! I went last night on a whim only knowing vaguely where it was located. I wasn't expecting so little parking and so many people on a Wednesday night, but legging it down the hill to the restaurant certainly didn't kill us. Surprisingly, though, we didn't have to wait to be seated. Baba Ghanooj is one of my favorite things ever. It beats Hummus in my opinion. So try it! I ordered the chicken and eggplant and it was amazing! Just the right amount of spices, which in my experience is hard to find in middle eastern food around here. The portions are rather large, but I'm paying $16 a plate so it better not be too small, haha! Oh and the basmati rice is to die for. To DIE for. I'm not really a basmati rice fan in general, but I've never had the really good stuff. And Mazza has the really good stuff. The server was awesome. Very helpful and polite and all that. Really there is not one thing wrong with the place and I will certainly go back again!

i've only lived in SLC for a week, and i've only visited the city a handful of times before that, but i've been to mazza more times than i can count. the seasonings are epic, the hummus is delicious, the service is fantastic, and the shwarma....oooooh the shwarma. hello, happiness. the dinner plates are massive and there is a great variety for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. the service has always been great, the restaurant is clean and tastefully decorated, and the food is always prompt and hot. i couldn't be happier to be walking distance to this gem.

A great restaurant. I tried as well the one in 9th and 9th, yet I prefer the one in 15th. It's just more authentic and the food is great. It's a top Middle East restaurant, as good as US can get.

Tasty Lebanese wines, full bar, heaping, spilling over Martinis, great group spot. The lemon drop Champagne Martini is quite tasty indeed. Appetizers worth a nomination: The Muharmara is 5 stars!! It's a traditional Aleppan dip made with walnuts, pomegranate molasses, toasted bread crumbs, olive oil, roasted bell peppers & spices, ground to a paste and served with lettuce leaves. 3 other tasty appetizers: Potatoes Harra, Hummus B'Lahmeh, and Ful Mudammas. Service: 3 stars- pretty responsive when not chatting with the other waiters behind the bar. We had to flag him down a couple times. The entrees worth at least an Oscar nod were: Lamb & Rice Dolaa, Baked Kafta, and their signature dish Mazza's Chicken & Potatoes Mutabbak is scrumptuous. If this isn't enough to fill you up, get a beef or lamb skewer and it falls off the stick. It's utterly delish-mania. Service: 3 stars- pretty responsive when not chatting with the other waiters behind the bar. We had to flag him down a couple times. Food: 4-5 stars Drinks: 4-5 stars

All around great! Had a trio appetizer sampler: Fûl Mudammas (good), Loobia (yum!), Lamb Sfiha (very good). Then the Baked Eggplant sandwich which was AMAZING! Husband had the Mediterranean Steak & Cheese sandwich, which he liked. And, the Cream Phyllo Roll (good) for dessert. Service was very good. Wasn't sure if I would like the orange sauce in the dessert, so the waiter brought me a sample before we ordered it. Very thoughtful! If they take reservations, you should definitely try to make one first. We didn't have one and had to wait about 20-30 min for a table on a Fri night. Not terrible, but place is small with no place to wait, so had to stand outside. Would defintely go again.

I love Mazza. The food is fantastic, and they have a great wine list. The service is a little spotty- sometimes great, sometimes just ok... If you go to the 15th & 15th location, understand that it is itty-bitty, and they will feel overwhelmed by a larger group, and you'll get crappy service. The very first time I went was as part of a larger group. 8 of us went, not knowing how little this location is, and I thought the host was going to kill us. He flat out told us "We only seat 30 people here." He was pretty stressed out over it. And then we almost did him in by asking to have the check split. But all that aside, I still love Mazza. The food was fantastic. The desserts were good, things you'd have a hard time to find anywhere else in Utah. I highly recommend Mazza, its just really not a good idea for groups.

Very good food and service. Tons of vegetarian appetizers. Great appetizer sampler - you can choose 3 or 4 appetizers and they give you a small portion of each. Only 2 vegetarian entrees. I would like to see them add brown rice and whole wheat naan.

  • Alice Y.

I am also a fan of the 9th and 9th version of Mazza. This one has less of a huge commercial feel and more of a cozy homey "you're eating in my living room" feel. The downside is that it's cramped, there's no room to wait for a table, and the service is somewhat slow. All that said, it's the same delicious food as the 9th and 9th location, and I AM a fan of that.

One word, okay maybe several (like I could actually limit myself to one word)... Delicious, magical... cozy...but maybe a little too cozy... but definitely worth a trip. The place is small, really, really small. We went on a Friday night and there was a wait but because the place is so small I felt like I was standing over tables starring down people trying to get them to leave so we could have a table.... I even started greeting people as they walked into the door because that was the only place to stand. We got to be so friendly with a couple of other people who were waiting for a table in this really, really small place that we ended up being seated together at the same table... which led to one of the most interesting evenings I have ever had, but that is a whole other story...back to food which was pretty darn amazing. The Harra... wonderful, Hummus...creamy, rustic, melt in your mouth good. Falafel... really, really crispy on the outside and yummy on the inside. A charming little magical place that I will be back to! I think for what you get, the price was reasonable, ambiance was cozy, service was pretty good.... strangers we shared a table with... interesting, but led to a really great story to tell my friends.

This is an outstanding restaurant, and a place for world-class vegetarian food and tasty Lebanese wines that you can't find elsewhere. We almost always get the combination platter with hummus, baba ganouj, potatoes harra and.... here things get tricky. Do we get the grape leaves? The muhammara? The house salad? It's so hard to choose! I think they put some kind of drug in the hummus and baba ganouj because they are so smooth and addictive. I've always had good service here (and at the other location), but one of the things I rate highest about service is knowing something about the wines and the food. The servers here always do, and I"ve always found them attentive and helpful. I also have a favorite dessert here, that I actually dream about sometimes: the apricot turnover. Once, I actually saw the grandma bringing in a tray of them. There's a limited supply of them, though, so you probably wouldn't like it.

Mazza is the best! Great servers, great people, amazing food. You can't really go wrong ordering anything on the menu. Any time I have friends or co-workers in town I take them to Mazza and no one is ever disappointed.

Yum! Loved it. This was probably the best meal I have had in Salt Lake. The lamb kebab and fava bean stew were great. The service was understated but good. In fact, what I really liked about it was the casual atmosphere combined with great food. I feel like it is one of those places I can go to for a special occasion dinner or for just an evening out.

The only good thing about this place is the wine and pita with hummus. Otherwise the meat on the kabobs are dry and chicken schwarma had no taste. You get this all at this extremely overpriced restaurant!

Love to lunch at Mazza! Their middle eastern spiced fries are great! Whenever we go and are seated, the staff knows to start preparing our fries extra crispy the way we like them. The fries are served with Aoli sauce and they always supply us with an extra since they know we'll need and ask for it. Their food is consistently wonderful and the staff is personable and attentive.

I recently saw that the City Weekly had voted this place the best "Date Spot" in the city. This amused me because this is where muh man took me for our first date . Doesn't it bring a tear of joy to your eye? Anyway, I guess part of the reason we're together is because the food at this place is so good. Usually with a place, I'll stick to one thing on the menu, but there's so many great and unique dishes at Mazza, that I can't just order the same thing all the time. Wine selection is mint, including some good Lebanese wines. Service is always fabulous. So, yeah, take your date here and see if it helps you out, or something. (Update: the guy mentioned in this review is now my ex, but I totally impressed my new boyfriend with this place.)

Unpretentious levantine food ...EXACTLY what the doctor ordered. And the menu is filled with options we've all heard of (if not eaten) -- but sprinkled with just enough exotic fare to make wandering off the (b)eaten path a delight. Not sure what to order? Ask the friendly, knowledgeable waitstaff -- and be sure to try the pickled veggies! A wonderful treat. The mood is, as mentioned elsewhere, date-friendly (if a tad dark for folks that aren't looking for a goodnight kiss) at night, yet fun during the day.

Good place to have authentic Lebanese food. We received excellent service from the restaurant staff and their menu selection was great. Now, I grew up eating Lebanese food and know when I am served a well prepared dish or not. We ordered several items on the "Mezzeh" (starters/appetizers) which were really good. The Potato Harra, Kibbeh, Mhammarah and Sfiha were all good. The Tabbouleh and Fattoush on the other hand disappointed primarily because the parsley stems were left in the salad! Authentic Fattoush and Tabbouleh only have parsley leaves - no stems. This made the Fattoush and Tabbouleh inedible and bitter. The main courses we had were also very well prepared: Lamb Shoulder with Rice (the waiter said they don't use rib meat any longer), Okra and beef, Shawarma, and Potato and Chicken bake were tasty and the portions were huge. Overall I am happy and would go back to this restaurant but will not order the Fattoush nor the Tabbouleh until the parsley stems are eliminated.

I have never been disappointed here. GREAT food! One time we showed up at the 9th and 9th location and were told it would be a 40 minute wait. Then a person I assume is the owner walked up and asked us if we would be willing to go to the other restaurant if there was a table available there. He called to the 15th and 15th location and made us a reservation and 10 minutes later we were seated at that location!

***** - Superior, Excellent In a small town like SLC, although it's growing and the cuisine becoming more diverse, it can still be hard to find really good food of a certain sort. I've sampled the (from what I have seen) three or four main middle eastern restaurants around town and this place is the best of them all. It's east coast good! For one thing the pita is fresh baked, soft, and warm. The other places do not have pita this good. The falafel, hummos, and baba ghanoush are all first rate! When I get a craving for real middle eastern food, this is the place! (Aristos has an eggplant dish that is actually another version of Baba so there is that also which is excellent.)

    (5)
  • Albert H.

Best falafel in SLC, and this was probably my favorite lunch spot in recent years. Pita was good, hummus was good, just about every food item we ordered was good. Prices were reasonable too, and the only faults I have is that it is a tiny location and parking can be horrible sometimes.

  • Al M.

One word to describe this place. Excellent. This compared and stacked up to some of the best lebonese food I've eaten in the states. The shwarma, and chicken with cauliflower was great. The appetizers were fantastic. Tried the kibeh, muharrah? And the baba ghanouj. The beef skewer was just right. The chicken skewer was a little dry. All in all great good would definitely go back. Dont forget to try the 9th street location if you want spirits. This location serves only beer and wine.

  • Robert W.

So here's the thing... I love the steak sandwich, the fries are a MUST, with the Mazza ultra yummy fry sauce. And, there are plenty of more _Middle Eastern_ type choices. Remember the sides (like fries) don't come with your item. TWO locations 9th & 9th is more trendy and hip, 15th & 15th is like a secret hole in the wall. Both are near a Starbucks... hmmm.

Mazza is one of my favorite Lebanese restaurants in the city. They are fairly authentic. I highly recommend trying their Kafta sandwich, Lamb Sausage sandwich, Tabbooleh, and Pita with Zattar. Wash it all down with their fresh made lime-aid. Yum!

one of the things i actually miss about salt lake city is mazza. i used to work at the starbucks next door at 15th and 15th and needed to exercise much self control to not eat there everyday. the staff is always incredibly nice, which is an extremely rare find in salt lake. everything on the menu is incredible... tabbooleh, dolmas, chicken shwarma, kebabs, falafel... all of it! i love it! starting a list of places in salt lake that i miss... mazza is at the top!

My parents, siblings, and I have lived in Lebanon off and on for fifty five years. We have developed a real love for Mediterranean food and Lebanese food in particular. We made reservations for a Saturday evening for four. We were seated right away. The server was helpful and provided us with good service. The Mezza appetizer of Tabbouleh, Hummus, Babba Ghanough, and Fattoosh was amongst the best we have had in a while. The Kafta entree was topped with a sauce, which was a new experience, and was average. The other three entrees were average. We had a great bottle of Lebanese red wine, a rare find in the States, Ksara du Couvent . All in all, it was a three and a half star experience, entirely due to the entrees.

This lebanese place is quite a surprising find, considering the location. Everything is quite good, though the best are their lamb kabobs, truly tender with almost no gameyness, and their baba ghanoush, which is out of this world. Plan on a wait during normal dinner hours.

This place is overrated on yelp. It's decent, but not spectacular. I'd give the Muhamara 2 stars, the fries 3.5 stars, and the lamb sfiha 3.5 stars. I'd give the pitas 2 stars. There isn't much room at this restaurant location. Best to order takeout.

I liked the atmosphere and the service of the restaurant, but the food is so americanized.

Look I am a meat and potatoes guy-so this is for those of you who are as well-do not come here. If you like vegtables and exotic foods then this is your place. The small diner can be also a pain since there is usually a wait. So if you do not like trying new things go back to you favorite place as I was not too impressed with this one.

Salt Lake City isn't exactly known for its culinary delights. And yet somehow, right smack in the middle of a 'hood that could literally be Anywheresville, USA, Mazza has managed to carve out its niche. The Middle Eastern cuisine here is fabulous--quite possibly the best I've ever had! The service can be a little slow, but everyone is always smiling and very nice. The restaurant is tiny (maybe 10 tables total) so it gets packed at dinner time. My recommendation? Call ahead and order over the phone. Then, take your dinner home. Avoid the crowd. Favorites include: the lamb sfiha, potatoes harrah, all the specialty dinner entrees (which feature free range and organic meats), and of course, the homemade tabouleh. Delicious!

I've only been to Salt Lake City once in my life, and I only stayed there for less than four hours. However, eating at Mazza made my stay quite pleasent. This little middle eastern restaurant has a wonderful menu with a wide variety of items to chose from. The hummus and pita bread tickled my taste buds and the potatos harra were delightful. Truely a place for anyone to enjoy delicious ethnic food.
